Dietary experts1 recommend we eat at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables, drink 8 glasses of water and keep active every day – good advice for maintaining a healthy, well balanced lifestyle.

However, these days, where there is never enough time to look into our healthy and not-so-healthy eating habits, this may seem all too difficult. Regardless of whether you are busy juggling family and work commitments, working long hours to achieve your career goals or studying hard to pass your exams, it can be achieved.

Tips on Eating Out

  1. Ask for an entrée size meal as a main dish.
  2. Choose clear soups, consommés or light vegetable soups rather than cream soups.
  3. Choose grilled fish, steamed vegetables or pasta with tomato base sauces.
  4. Choose a fresh fruit platter, fruit salad or sorbet instead of rich desserts.
  5. Ask for a jug of iced water to quench your thirst before ordering other drinks.
  6. Drink mineral water or low joule soft drinks with your meal.

Off-The-Menu Ideas

  1. Avoid using butter and margarine. Bread and vegetables can do without these spreads.
  2. Avoid foods described as creamed, battered, crumbed, pan-fried, deep fried, crispy and au-gratin.
  3. Limit dishes based on cream, sour cream and coconut milk / cream.
  4. Avoid  extras served with meals (e.g. nibbles such as chips / nuts / crispy noodles / creamy dips, butter with bread, garlic bread, chips with the main course, creamy sauces, chocolates and cream with coffee).
  5. Remove any visible fat on meats and skin on poultry.

Off-The-Menu Ideas

  1. Avoid sausages, continental meats, luncheon meats and salami.
  2. Limit full-cream milk, full-cream yoghurt and full-cream cheeses.
  3. Avoid rich desserts. Opt for sorbets and fruit platters instead.
  4. Avoid buying biscuits and cakes. Once in the cupboard they'll soon be discovered.
  5. Avoid croissants, sweet pastries and any savoury food covered in pastry (e.g. pies, pasties, sausage rolls).
