The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".1 Many books, reports, magazines and newspaper articles have been written about achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have chosen some 'Did You Know' snippets from articles written by Australian experts that we hope you will find interesting. 1. Fat has twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrate and protein, with far, far less filling power. Not to mention that it's more readily converted to and stored as body fat.2 2.75% of hunger pangs are actually a request from your body for water. So each time you feel hungry, have a glass of water. If you still feel hungry 20 minutes later, have something to eat.3 3.The good news about exercise is that it increases the metabolic rate of the body for up to 6 hours after exercise... longer for endurance sports.4 4.Men tend to gain weight more readily in the abdominal region rather than on the upper thighs and hips like most women.4 However, fat above the hips (especially the abdomen) carries a far greater health risk than fat on or below the hips.5 5.Men have a larger body and muscle mass that burns more energy. As a result, women may burn some 40% fewer calories while engaging in the same amount and type of physical activity as men.6 Footnotes 1 www.abs.gov.au/ausstats (Health and wellbeing). |
